When I was a student😇, one of the biggest issues👀 I had was how to answer certain types of test questions👎. I felt alone in this matter😔 because I didn't talk to other students to see if they were having the same situation. I was scared😓. I thought that if I said something, people would think that I was not smart or good enough to be in college😕. However, later I found out that most students have the same issue struggling with test questions and how to tackle them😯. And all of the sudden, I was not alone! 😀

So, now that I'm the professor😄, I would like to pass on this knowledge so that my students, as well as everyone who reads me, can benefit from this insight👍. It is important to share 👀👂this since not many teachers share this information around. Furthermore, there is still a stigma to shame those who are less informed😟😣but are making a big effort to get their degrees or learn new skills👏. Thus, my message for you is to keep going further, trust in yourself, and focus on the main goal: obtaining your degree!👌💪

Here are the Tips to Answer those difficult test questions:

A. Multiple Choice Questions

1.Read the question and analyze it. This is the first and most important step because the question tells you several messages, including the situation and the problem.

2. Think of the possible answer. By thinking of the possible answer to the problem, this will give you an idea of what to look up for in the answer section.

3. Look at the options and eliminate two. While looking at the answers, eliminate at least two options that are wrong, and this will increase your chances to get it right by, at least, 50%. I like those odds, and you should too!

4. Choose the answer that matches your possible answer. Tip #2 asks you to think of a possible answer, because you will match this to the answer section. If you don't see the exact answer you though of, then choose the closest one. If none of the answers are similar to your possible answer, then you should consider re-evaluating the question and your options. It is possible that you misread it.

B. True/False Questions

1. Read the question slowly and out loud (if possible). This is the most important step, because reading it slowly can give you time to understand the question. Also, reading it out loud (during home-testing, for example) can give you the opportunity to also listen to it, and increasing your brain activity.

2. Analyze the question, and determine if the statement makes sense. Stopping to analyze the question is essential to decide if the statement is right or wrong.

3. Pay attention to small details; if one word is incorrect, the entire statement will be false, and viceversa.

4. If you studied, trust your gut, and choose the answer. Take an educated guess by trusting that you study the material and know the information.

Pro-Tip: DO NOT change your answer unless you're 100% sure you were wrong. Studies show that the majority of the time, the first choice was correct, and changing it later could hurt your scores.

This is it for these two types of questions. In my next Blogpost, I will explain other types of questions and give you tips to answer them. ©Maryvi Gonzalez Sola & Queen Mary Anatomy LLC

Scientifically Proven Tips for More Effective Studying

Jailenne I. Quiñones-Rodriguez (she|her|ella)  www.jailennequinones.com in collaboration with QMA Studying is part of everyday life and professional preparation. It is also a technique that requires patience, practice, and trial and error. As you think about studying tips that are right for you, in this blog we explore four scientifically proven study t echniques from scientific journals and some of the world’s best resources like Harvard, Yale, MIT, and Cornell University. 1. Use Active recall   This controversial method of studying was a talking point in 2009 when a psychology professor published an article advising students against reading and rereading textbooks which, he argued, merely lead students to think they know the material better than they do since it is right in front of them. Conversely, he recommended students use active recall: closing the book and reciting everything they can remember up to that point to practice long-term memorization. 2. Use Leitner Sy...

Surviving the Transition From High School to College

Jailenne I. Quiñones-Rodriguez (she|her|ella) www.jailennequinones.com in collaboration with QMA   The transition from high school to college is an exciting and scary time in your life and for most people. This is the biggest adaptation you make in your life up until this point. Before you leave the nest without looking back, think about what you’ll do to help yourself make it a smooth transition. During high school , I had the experience of moving from one private to a public one and starting fresh in a new high school. Theoretically, the teaching system is the same but, the change of environment was quite different.  With that move under my belt, I thought the conversion from high school to college would be an easy one for me. As well, I consider myself to be independent in this aspect. After school, I completed my assignments by myself, I kept my room clean without my parents asking. And I could prepare basic meals and take care of myself.   Before freshman year beg...
